Alan Turing was a British mathematician whose ideas laid foundations for modern computing. In 1936 he described the “Turing machine,” a simple abstract device that captured the notion of computation and helped define what problems are computable. During World War II he worked at Bletchley Park, designing methods and machinery that accelerated the breaking of German Enigma ciphers, aiding Allied intelligence. After the war he contributed to early computer design, software concepts, and artificial intelligence, proposing the “Turing test” as a measure of machine-like conversation. His work still shapes computer science. He also studied morphogenesis, linking biology with computation. In 2023 the UK government granted him a posthumous pardon for his charge of “gross indecency” for admitting he was a homosexual.
