
Pete Buttigieg is an American politician who served as mayor of South Bend, Indiana, before running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. A Harvard graduate and Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, he also served as a U.S. Navy Reserve intelligence officer and deployed to Afghanistan. In 2021 he became U.S. Secretary of Transportation, the first openly gay person confirmed to a Cabinet-level position. Buttigieg has focused on infrastructure investment, aviation and rail safety, supply-chain resilience, and electric-vehicle adoption. Married to Chasten Buttigieg, he has spoken widely about faith, service, and pragmatic governance, often translating policy into clear public language for audiences.
