Lynn Conway was a pioneering American computer scientist, engineer, and transgender activist. After early work at IBM, she made foundational contributions at Xerox PARC to very-large-scale integration (VLSI) design methods, coauthoring the influential textbook Introduction to VLSI Systems with Carver Mead. Their work helped democratize chip design and accelerated the modern semiconductor industry. Conway later held senior roles at DARPA and in industry, shaping high-performance computing and microelectronics programs. Publicly transitioning in the late 1990s, she became a prominent advocate for trans rights and workplace dignity. Her technical legacy and storytelling inspired generations of engineers and LGBTQ+ people worldwide.
