Logan Ireland is a transgender man who served 15 years in the U.S. Air Force, reaching the rank of Master Sergeant. He entered the Air Force in 2010 during the era of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” before he had the language to describe who he was.  He deployed to Afghanistan, where a direct conversation with Secretary of Defense Ash Carter helped launch significant discussions within the Department of Defense about transgender service.  A lead plaintiff in Ireland v. Hegseth challenging Trump’s transgender military ban, he retired in May 2026 in Hawaii, with former President Obama sending a personal congratulatory letter.  He remains a mentor within SPARTA, the transgender military advocacy organization.

Quote: “I do that because there’s going to be someone that’s one day going to come after me that wants a seat at that military table, and they want to see me being a visible trans person, because maybe they are [trans], or maybe there’s someone from another marginalized community that doesn’t know if military has a place for them. By being visible and showing that, hey, I’m doing it, exceeding the standard, you can do it too.”
