Yayoi Kusama was a Japanese contemporary artist known for immersive installations, obsessive repetition, and her signature polka dots. After early work in Japan, she moved to New York in 1958, influencing Pop, Minimalism, and performance with happenings and provocative soft-sculptures. Her art draws on lifelong hallucinations and anxiety, turning personal experience into vast “Infinity Mirror Rooms,” pumpkins, and mirrored environments. Since the 1970s she has lived and worked in Tokyo, exhibiting globally and becoming one of the world’s most visited artists. In interviews and biographies, she is often described as asexual, expressing strong aversion to sex in public.
