Bea Arthur was an American actor whose commanding presence and dry wit made her a television icon. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, she broke through on Broadway and became a household name as the outspoken, principled Maude Findlay on Maude, set in Tuckahoe, NY. The series was culturally significant for bringing feminist themes, frank political debate, and previously taboo subjects into mainstream prime-time TV, helping reshape what sitcoms could address. Arthur later became beloved for The Golden Girls. Offscreen, she was a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, supporting HIV/AIDS causes and gay rights organizations.
