Candy Darling

Candy Darling

Candy Darling was a groundbreaking transgender actress and Warhol superstar who became an icon of 1960s New York’s underground scene. Born James Slattery, she crafted a glamorous, old-Hollywood persona and pursued stardom amid widespread anti-trans prejudice. At Andy Warhol’s Factory, Darling appeared in key films that blended improvisation, provocation, and celebrity-making, including Flesh (1968), Women in Revolt (1971), and the Paul Morrissey–directed Trash (1970), where her presence brought wit, vulnerability, and ambition to the screen. She also featured in Warhol’s portrait photography and inspired songs and writing. Darling died of lymphoma at 29.

Quote: “You must always be yourself, no matter what the price. It is the highest form of morality.”
