Bishop V. Gene Robinson

Bishop V. Gene Robinson

V. Gene Robinson was an American Episcopal bishop whose ministry reshaped debates about inclusion in global Anglicanism. Raised in Kentucky and ordained a priest in 1973, he served for decades as a parish rector and diocesan leader in New Hampshire. In 2003 he was elected and consecrated as Bishop of New Hampshire, becoming the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church and a focal point of worldwide controversy and dialogue. His tenure emphasized pastoral care, public witness, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ equality. Robinson later became a prominent speaker and author, continuing to press the church toward fuller inclusion.

Quote: “It’s an awful thing to stand in a pulpit and encourage people to live authentic lives when you know you’re not being authentic. It’s why I felt God called me out of the closet.”
