Barney Frank

Barney Frank

Barney Frank served over three decades as a Massachusetts Democrat in the U.S. House and became one of America’s most prominent openly gay politicians. He used his visibility to push Congress toward equal treatment of LGBT people—calling out discrimination, supporting employment and hate-crimes protections, and arguing for full legal recognition of same-sex relationships as attitudes evolved. His frank, often humorous style helped normalize LGBTQ representation in national politics and made it harder to ignore civil-rights claims. He mentored lawmakers and activists. Frank was known legislatively for co-authoring Dodd-Frank financial reforms. he died on May 20, 2026.

Quote: “The issue is not that morals be applied to public policy, it’s that conservatives bring public policy to spheres of our lives where it should not enter.”
