Harvey Milk became a pioneering force in American LGBTQ+ rights and one of the first openly gay elected officials in the United States. After moving to San Francisco, he organized the Castro district politically, building coalitions with labor unions, minorities, and small businesses. Milk ran repeatedly for office, using campaigns to mobilize gay voters and demand equal treatment. Elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, he pushed for anti-discrimination protections and helped defeat California’s Briggs Initiative, which sought to ban gay teachers. In 1978, Milk was assassinated, becoming a lasting symbol of visibility and activism.
