Ben Barres

Ben Barres

Ben Barres was an American neuroscientist and pioneering expert on glial cells, especially oligodendrocytes and astrocytes, who helped reshape understanding of how non‑neuronal cells support and regulate brain function. A professor at Stanford University, he combined rigorous molecular and developmental neuroscience with mentorship that trained many leading researchers. Barres was also a prominent advocate for gender equity in science, candidly documenting bias and pushing institutions to change hiring, funding, and culture. As a transgender man, he spoke publicly about his experiences to broaden inclusion. He died of pancreatic cancer in 2017. His work influenced basic research and potential therapies.

Quote: “I hope that I have helped ease their way a little bit. It is very difficult to live life in a closet. It does not make sense to do this because of an occasional bigot.”
