David Hockney

David Hockney

David Hockney was a British painter whose career spans Pop art, portraiture, landscape, and experimental image-making. Emerging in 1960s London, he became known for cool, flat color, crisp outlines, and witty attention to everyday desire. After moving to Los Angeles, he painted sunlit pools, friends, and the male body using clean geometry and luminous acrylics. Portraits and double portraits explore intimacy through staged poses and patterned interiors. From the 1990s onward, he returned to Yorkshire and Normandy, making exuberant seasonscapes with heightened perspective, bold brushwork, and vivid, non-natural color. Later, he embraced photography, iPads, and multi-panel panoramas, often boldly. Hockney died yesterday, June 11th, 2026.

Quote: “What an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course art is about sharing. You wouldn’t be an artist unless you wanted to share an experience, a thought.”
