Mary Bonauto is a civil-rights attorney whose litigation helped transform legal recognition of same-sex relationships in the United States. Working with GLAD, she argued that denying marriage to same-sex couples violated constitutional guarantees of equality and liberty, bringing LGBTQ families’ everyday realities—parenting, healthcare, inheritance, dignity—into courtrooms. She served as lead counsel in Obergefell v. Hodges at the U.S. Supreme Court, the case that secured nationwide marriage equality in 2015.
