Soni Wolf was a San Francisco–based lesbian activist, writer, and motorcycle enthusiast best known for helping create Dykes on Bikes, the long‑running women‑led riding contingent that opens many Pride parades. In the mid‑1970s, Wolf and other women riders began informally gathering to ride together to gay events and to provide a bold, protective presence at demonstrations. The group’s visibility grew as their roaring entrance became a Pride tradition, symbolizing strength, community, and queer liberation. Wolf later supported organizing, outreach, and storytelling that preserved the group’s history and expanded participation beyond California. She championed inclusion, safety, and women’s leadership on motorcycles.
Quote: “It rhymes,” Wolf said of her fierce defense of the group’s name Dykes on Bikes. “Just kind of rolls off the tongue.”
