Dr. Joycelyn Elders is a pediatric endocrinologist who served as U.S. Surgeon General (1993–1994) and became a lightning rod for frank, science-based talk about sexuality. Elders argued that public health requires comprehensive sex education, condom access, and honest discussion of masturbation and teen sexuality—positions that also supported safer, less stigmatizing approaches for LGBTQ people during the HIV/AIDS era. She publicly urged policymakers to address discrimination and health disparities rather than moralize. Elders actively championed the repeal of discriminatory policies, including the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on gay members and the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. After political backlash, President Clinton asked for her resignation, but Elders continued advocating for evidence-driven sexual health and inclusive education, especially for youth and communities left unheard.
