Aleksandar “Aleks” Donev grew up in North Macedonia. His academic brilliance brought him to the attention of a Peace Corp volunteer who was able to help him get into a program at the State University of New York and Plattsburgh. He went on to earn a PhD in Applied and Computational Mathematics from Princeton University. As a professor at New York University, Donev became a leading expert in modeling the effect of thermal noise in physical systems, particularly gasses, liquids, colloids and cross linked networks of actin filaments and related applications. He was a driving force in NYU’s DEI study group and was a mentor and role model as an openly queer professor. His creative output and collaboration continued until his untimely death in November 2023.
