Sarah Schulman is an American novelist, playwright, historian, and activist whose work examines power, queerness, and urban life. A longtime voice in LGBTQ+ and feminist movements, she participated in ACT UP and co-founded the direct-action group the Lesbian Avengers, shaping public advocacy during and after the AIDS crisis. Schulman has written influential nonfiction on AIDS-era politics, conflict, gentrification, and transformative justice, alongside acclaimed novels and essays often set in New York City. She teaches and speaks widely, urging solidarity across communities and advocating responses to harm that prioritize accountability, care, and social change over punishment. She bridges art and organizing.
