An English modernist writer and critic, Virginia Woolf helped reshape the novel with works like Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse. She also was an essayist, some of which were collected in A Room of One’s Own. Central to the Bloomsbury Group, she championed artistic experimentation and women’s intellectual freedom. The Bloomsbury Group held progressive views on sexuality and many of its members, including Woolf, were bisexual or homosexual. Orlando was written as a love letter to her lover and close friend, Vita Sackville-West, and published by the Hogarth Press, which Woolf started with her husband, Leonard. Woolf’s life was marked by recurring mental illness and periods of intense creativity.
